Chapter Ten

What the hell? It was like an alternate universe. Lil stared up at the digital screen watching the numbers change. Elevators were the worst. She usually made small talk with the other passengers or at the very least, offered a greeting. This time, that wasn’t an option.

Lil stood between both men, barely moving a muscle. The tension was so thick in the six-by-six space, Lil was counting down the seconds til the doors opened.

She knew of their past. Not in depth but an abbreviated version. It didn’t matter. These two men had history. Erik Murdoch was Caroline’s partner for years before her death.

Lil had dealt with her own encounters with the detective. None of them memorable. Hours of interrogation in a small bland room without access to a bathroom or counsel wasn’t worth remembering. It only added to the uneasiness of being stuck on the elevator with him. It hadn’t happened often, maybe only three times before. He’d always been cordial and professional with a simple nod.

Once the doors opened, Detective Murdoch got off the elevator, and the doors closed. She was finally able to take in a deep breath. Gunner, on the other hand, was the picture of calm and composure. How he managed to pull that off was beyond her.

“Well, that wasn’t awkward at all.”

She side-glanced Gunner, who remained silent, but she noticed his shoulders relax slightly. Maybe he wasn’t as calm as she initially thought.

“You know him?”

Lil sighed, folding her arms. “Countless hours in interrogation defending Rogue’s honor. It was exhausting.”

Gunner smirked.

“He’s not a bad guy, though.”

Murdoch was simply doing his job.

“No, he’s not.”

Lil stared up at the screen, not giving in to a reaction, but she was surprised by Gunner’s statement. Most members of the Underground had little to no interaction with law enforcement unless they were on the payroll. And even then, not much respect or courtesy was given. Maybe she was missing something with Gunner and Murdoch.

Once the reached her floor, she led him down the short hall to her door. She opened her apartment door, walked inside and dropped her bag on the kitchen counter.

“Do you want something to drink?” Lil asked taking a step toward the refrigerator. When he didn’t answer, she turned back to Gunner. He was leaning against the door, his heated gaze perusing her body from head-to-toe. I know that look.

“Gunner?” Her tone was intentionally flirty.

His gaze lifted and he pushed off the door stalking towards her. Gunner wrapped his arms around her waist in a binding hold, and kissed her.

Before she could even suggest going to her bedroom, Gunner was moving blindly through her kitchen, never breaking away from the kiss. She had no idea where he was taking her. And I don’t care.

Kissing this man would never grow old, she suspected. She tightened her hold over his shoulders, moaning softly. His hands grasped her hips and she blinked her eyes open when she felt herself falling forward. Gunner sat down in the center of the couch and she was straddling his thighs.
